IEP Meeting Preparation Checklist

Request Documents Early
Ask the school for copies of:

  • Present Levels of Performance (PLOP) reports

  • Recent assessment/evaluation results

  • Proposed goals and services

  • Behavior plans (if applicable)
    Request these at least 5 days before the meeting.

  • Review Your Child’s Current IEP
    Read the existing IEP to understand current goals and services.

  • Make Notes and Questions
    Write down your child’s strengths, challenges, and any concerns.
    Prepare specific questions or requests related to goals, services, or accommodations.

  • Talk to Service Providers
    Reach out to therapists, teachers, or specialists for their input or reports.

  • Gather Additional Documentation
    Include doctor’s reports, outside evaluations, or progress notes relevant to your child’s needs.

  • Consider Your Child’s Voice
    If your child is able, ask if they want to share their thoughts or goals at the meeting.

  • Plan Your Goals for the Meeting
    Decide what outcomes you want — e.g., new services, changes in goals, accommodations.

  • Arrange for Support
    If desired, ask a trusted friend, advocate, or family member to attend with you.

During the Meeting

  • Take Notes
    Document key points, decisions, and any follow-up actions.

  • Ask for Clarification
    Don’t hesitate to ask questions if something isn’t clear.

  • Review All Documents Carefully
    Make sure goals, services, accommodations, and timelines are clearly stated.

  • Confirm Understanding
    Summarize key agreements to ensure everyone is on the same page.

  • Discuss Transition Plans
    If applicable, talk about upcoming changes, like moving to a new school or grade.

  • Agree on Follow-Up
    Set dates or methods for progress updates and future meetings.

After the Meeting

  • Get a Copy of the Finalized IEP
    Review it promptly for accuracy.

  • Follow Up on Questions or Concerns
    Contact the case manager or school if something needs correction or further discussion.

  • Implement the Plan
    Help your child access services and accommodations at home and school.

  • Monitor Progress
    Keep track of your child’s progress and communicate regularly with educators.

Sample Email to Request IEP Reports in Advance

Subject: Request for IEP Reports and Proposed Goals Prior to Upcoming IEP Meeting

In preparation for our child’s upcoming IEP meeting scheduled on [Insert Date], we are formally requesting the following documents in advance of the meeting:
